The Catholic Church continues to Respond Theologian Nancy Pelosi [by William D. Zeranski] Since Nancy Pelosi injected religion into Abortion politics by making erroneous remarks about Catholic teaching, the Church continues to respond -- sharply. Straight from the Vatican, U.S. Archbishop Raymond L. Burke, prefect of the Vatican's highest court, said, "The Democratic Party in the United States "risks transforming itself definitively into a 'party of death.'"...
Belief in God 'really can relieve pain' [by Alastair Jamieson] Research at Oxford University has found believers can draw on their religion to endure suffering with greater fortitude, suggesting Christian martyrs may have been able to reduce the agony of torture or slow death. [more]
Elf and Faerie : The development of Elves in Tolkien's Mythology [by P A van Heusden] Many readers of Tolkien's works are familiar with the faeries of literature and folklore, and the differences and similarities between these and Tolkien's Elves. I believe in Tolkien's Elves we are seeing a reinterpretation of these beings, and by studying them we can glean insights into Tolkien's mythogenic intentions in 'Lord of the Rings'. [more]
Churchgoing Catholics returning to GOP fold [by Ben Arnoldy] Gov. Sarah Palin has outsized impact on an important bloc in key battleground states. Observant Catholics are returning to the Republican fold now that Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has joined the GOP ticket – a shift that looks to be more enduring than a postconvention bounce. If the trend sticks, it will mark a partial setback for Democrats and the Obama campaign, who have vied vigorously for the pivotal votes of Roman Catholics. [more]

Palin Can Serve Family and Country [by R. Albert Mohler Jr] Sally Quinn wonders how Christian evangelicals -- and Southern Baptists in particular -- can affirm a woman as President or Vice President of the United States and yet believe that women should not serve as pastors of churches. "Is it hypocritical to think that a woman can lead a nation and not a congregation?," Sally and Jon Meacham ask. No, it is not hypocritical -- it is simply the application of biblical truth to different spheres of life and meaning. Sally Quinn's two essays on Gov. Sarah Palin raise fascinating issues, and reveal a basic lack of sympathetic understanding when it comes to conservative Christians. In her first post, she wrote: [more]

What if Mormons are right and Catholics and Protestants wrong?

Given Christian teaching, does it make more sense to baptise dead adults rather than live babies?
Why are the Catholic bishops so concerned about Mormons baptising dead parishioners? The Mormons didn’t invent baptism of the dead. The practice has a significant history within mainstream Christianity. The decision to order its abandonment was taken only after heated debate, and was a close-run thing.[more]
